Falling Angels and so much more

The Bay Area should be in a state of dance jubilation—the Nederlands Dans Theater is coming. If you’ve never seen their work, then you have been asleep: at least as far as the dance scene goes. This Dutch troupe performs some of the most astounding dance pieces you’ll ever see and attracts some of the best contemporary European dancers to perform in them. In one of their more famous works, Falling Angels, the dancers emerge from complete darkness. They pass through a ray of light walking slowly and carefully towards the audience. They arrange themselves into eight white squares that form an x across the stage. This impressive merging of light and bodies creates a highly designed experience. It’s like watching a carefully executed concept come to life. They will perform two West Coast premieres (Sehnsucht and Schmetterling) at Zellerbach Hall on the UC Berkeley campus, Wednesday October 23rd and Thursday October 24th at 8:00 PM. Choreographed by their resident artistic directors Sol León and Paul Lightfoot, these performances will be one of the highlights of the fall dance season.

March is a wonderful month if your name isn’t Caesar. There’s a great deal going on in the Bay Area art scene and whether you tastes run high, Garry Winogrand at SF MOMA, or low, Tom Cruise grinning his way through – God bless new technology - Top Gun 3D, there’s something for everyone. The point is to get out of the apartment and experience it all. If all you do is sit around, play video games and stream movies you might as well live in one of the thousands of hick towns that dot this great North American continent, and for a lot less money we might add. Instead, you live in the Bay Area and so live like your life’s worth something and take in all this overpriced coastal village has to offer: the art shows, the drag queens, the tribute bands, the pristine prints of off-beat movies and comedy so new that you won’t see the punch line coming.
